An Ras Mor 5K

The An Ras Mor is a rite of Spring–and never more so than this year, when an endless winter turned roads into white tunnels…and running between towering snowbanks made us feel like rats in a maze.

But the snowbanks melted this past week, and this morning we set the clocks ahead to launch Daylight Savings Time…so now a thousand of us have gathered to celebrate the new season.

Come! Run with me now…

(I took this photo, and the others below, while running.)

Fudgecicle 5K

The Fudgecicle 5K is held every Saturday morning in January and February, regardless of weather. No mere winter race, the Fudgecicle is a calling for the truly hard-core.

Under a weak sun faint enough to be flickering from a distant galaxy, the air warms to a bare two degrees…but it will take more than arctic cold to keep us indoors.

Come! Run with me now…

Fudgecicle 5K

The Fudgecicle 5K, hosted by the Greater Lowell Road Runners is a staple of the winter running scene north of Boston. Every Saturday in January and February–even when the temps dip below zero–the Fudgecicle draws runners from far and wide to run a flat 5K course, where we share the great camaraderie of running through the cold.

Come! Run with me now…

Winter Classic 5K

The Winter Classic 5K in Cambridge, MA is a bright spot during the darkest weekend of the year. The Winter Solstice is nearly here. Daylight has been dwindling and the temperature has dropped…

…but this race draws four hundred hardy souls to gather near MIT, many in costume–a painter’s palette defying the grey skies above. When the race starts, we flow like a rainbow to Harvard and back…

…and afterwards, we glow from the run (and the post-race Smuttynose beer. :)

Come! Run with me now…

John Mortimer, well ahead of the pack as he runs to victory.

My favorite costume: Alicia Leeman, garbed as “Holiday Cheer.”

AGN Turkey Tune-Up 5K

The AGN Turkey Tune-up is a scenic 5K around the “Great Neck”–a quiet peninsula jutting into the Atlantic from Ipswich, MA. There are many hills…but each time we reach a summit, we get a new view of the ocean.

“Go, Barefoot guy!” I hear from other runners and a few hardy spectators. They seem to be impressed that I’m running barefoot. This is my 21st barefoot race, all but four of them since Labor Day, so running barefoot is no big deal for me…but the cold temps and brisk wind have driven the wind chill down to the 30’s, making this a bit tough. Not tough on my feet! It’s just tough to be out here in this cold wind wearing only a singlet and shorts.

Brrrrr!

Fortunately, there’s hot chocolate after the race, and awards for some of my friends. Another beautiful day in Ipswich!

Come! Run with me now…
