Ascutney Mountain Challenge

The Ascutney Mountain Challenge is the final race in the USATFNE Mountain/Trail Circuit, also known as the “Mountain Goat” Series.

At 3.7 miles, it is half as long as Mt. Washington…with the same 12 percent grade that makes Washington so challenging.

Loon Mountain Race

The Loon Mountain Race is the steepest and perhaps the most challenging race in the USATFNE Mountain/Trail Circuit (aka “the Mountain Goat” Series.)

You run four miles up trails to the summit of Loon and then down the far side, where the real challenge begins:

The infamous Upper Walking Boss.

This half-mile climb has an astonishing 40 percent grade!

Come! Run with me now…

Wachusett Mountain Race

The Wachusett Mountain Race is a challenging mountain/trail race.  This year the course starts with a long steep climb up a road and then winds through a variety of trails, including steep, wet, technical singletrack.

It is the second race in the USATFNE Mountain/Trail Circuit, fondly known as the Mountain Goat Series.

Come! Run with me now…

Northfield Mountain Race

The Northfield Mountain Race is the first in the USATFNE Mountain/Trail Circuit, also known as The Mountain Goat Series. It draws mountain runners from throughout New England.

This morning is the first in many days with no rain…but the air is thicker than a steambath. Not that we mind. We came to run, and as long as the mountain is here we’ll run to the top and back down.

Come! Run with me now…

FJG Race to the Top of Vermont

The FJG Race to the Top of Vermont is one of my favorite mountain races. Its winding auto road feels much like Mt. Washington…but it’s only 4.3 miles (vs. 7.6 to the top of Mt. W.) so even on a very hot day it won’t wear you out the way Washington will. After the race you can recharge and relax with a BBQ and raffle. Well worth the drive to Stowe, VT.

Come! Run with me now

(I took these photos while running.)

All right! Let’s get to the good stuff–an HD video that puts you right in the middle of this race. Go ahead! Click the ‘Play’ button below. (And be sure to view the video in Full-Screen, so you’ll see the race in panoramic, high-resolution.)

Race to the Top of Vermont

The FJG Race to the Top of Vermont might be Mount Washington’s little brother. Just as steep as Washington, and it feels much like Mt. Washington…but it’s only 4.3 miles (vs. 7.6 to the top of Mt. W.) So you never get to climb above the clouds. But it’s a great race, with a terrific post-race BBQ and raffle. Well worth the drive to Stowe, VT.

Come! Run with me now

Mountain bikers start 5 minutes before we run!

We're running NOW!

(I took this photo, and the two below, while running.)

The road rises and disappears into the mist.

Joy at the summit.

Ascutney Mountain Challenge

Race #6 in the USATF-NE Mountain/Trail Circuit  (“Mountain Goat” Series)

Here are photos I took while running the 2009 Ascutney Mountain Race in Windsor, VT.

Ascutney is the sixth race in the USATF-NE Mountain/Trail series (the Mountain Goat series.) If you finish all six races, you become a Mountain Goat–and get to bypass the Mt. Washington Lottery next year.

I ran with a camera, and took pictures as I ran. (Yes, I took photos as I ran. I didn’t stop or slow down. After all, I was in a race!) If you click on the “Play” button in the center of the photo below, you can view my slideshow, and get a first-person experience of the 2009 Ascutney Mountain Challenge in Windsor, VT:
